If You Hit a Power LineLook Up Home< Back

If there is no immediate danger, take these steps:

  • If you can do so safely, move the equipment away from the line.
  • Stay on the equipment until utility workers signal you off.
  • Warn others to stay far away. Anyone who touches the equipment or even the ground nearby may be injured or killed.
  • Have someone call 911 and Ameren Illinois at 800.755.5000 immediately.

If you MUST get off the equipment due to fire or other danger, jump clear.
Land far enough away from the equipment that you don’t touch the equipment and the ground at the same time. Land with your feet together and shuffle away, keeping your feet together and on the ground at all times. Or, hop away on two feet, keeping both feet together. Resist the temptation to run or take long steps, as this puts you at risk of shock.

If your equipment touches a power line, wait on the equipment until rescue workers arrive. If you must get off, jump clear without touching the equipment and the ground at the same time, and shuffle or hop away, keeping your feet together at all times.
